We are glad to invite you to attend the 2017 International Widows’ Day Celebration on Friday, June 23, 2017 at Nigeria Ports Authority Hall (NPA), Eko Club Close, Off Bode Thomas, Off Eric Moore, Surulere, Lagos. This is a day set aside by the UN to celebrate widows all over the world. The interesting theme selected for this year is: NOT ALONE.
Today, there are over 245 million widows in the world. This figure unfortunately is on a steady increase due to: armed conflict; poverty and diseases etc. Yet societies often ignore widows and so they suffer in silence. Widows are the most vulnerable of all women. They are being neglected by their own relations and governments. Most of them are in their prime of life, young women left as sole caters for their children: responsible for their shelter, food, clothing schooling and all wellbeing.
CVL – Widow Support Centre (WSC) which was set up about 25 years ago, joins the rest of the world to pay tribute to widows in a very special way, through an event specifically organised for our Women of Grace group who are members of the CVL WSC. At this event, we will unveil the new face of the CVL WSC with a new Vision: A World OF Empowered Widows With Dignity, and a new Mission: To Build A Network OF Contented Widows Through Social Welfare, Mindset Re-orientation, Wealth Creation And Advocacy.
The event will be used to also showcase other WSC initiatives like the Blue Rose for Widows Programme ((BRWP). One of such programme is the Adopt-a-Widow, an empowerment programme designed to train and empower 1,000 widows. They will be trained and empowered in about 15 different areas such as: Hats and Beads making, Catering Services, Fashion Design, Adire Production, Bags/Sandals/Shoe making, Waste Poly recycling/Nylon production, Computer/Printing, Dancing, Scriptwriting, Cosmetology/Gele Tying, Makeup, Music(Instrumentals).
Activities Lined Up On The Event Include:
- Paper presentations on Domestication of Girl Child Rights to Inheritance in Nigeria.
- Exhibitions of African Prints designs/Crafts.
- Fundraising Fashion Show with the theme- Africa Prints-Abada, Adire Ankara; The Victorian Dress Sense.
- Light music with special theme on women.
- Documentary on Activities of WSC in 25 years /Appreciation of Partners, Friends, Donors
The Founder/CEO of CVL, Professor Pat Utomi will be the Chief Host with Hon. Jummai Al-Hassan, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development as the Special Guest and Keynote Speaker. Both International and local media stations will be invited to cover the day.

Nothing was given to them according to the workman’s compensation Act 2010. Meanwhile the CEO Martin Craighead was paid $74.4m for just moving position from CEO to Vice Chairman as a merger. The widows and children are suffering as they await a hearing of their cases in NICN/PHC/165-178/2017. Please help make sure they are paid their money according to the labor law of the federal Republic of Nigeria. Thank you
