According to the World Bank Report, more work needs to be done to end poverty in Nigeria, else by 2030, Nigeria will be one of the 10 countries contributing to global poverty adding 61.5million poor people to the global total.
The level of ultra-poverty remains unacceptably high and this connotes a situation where individuals receive less than 80 percent of the minimum caloric intake whilst spending more than 80% of income on food. The need to address this issue is pertinent and calls for urgent action. In a document presented by Adetoun Oluwole for CVL “at the 12th edition of CVL Annual Lecture which happens to be the birthday of Prof. Pat Utomi (Founder/CEO, CVL), Centre for Values in Leadership will be holding a public lecture to discuss the theme; The challenge of Ultra-Poverty: Transforming the poorest of the poor. The purpose of the lecture is to create a platform for corporate organizations, government and the public to discuss pressing issues that affect the larger population and seek recommendations on how to strategically resolve such’’
Speakers at this lecture will include; Ms. Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly, World Bank Country Director in Nigeria, Hon. Fiifi Kwetey, Minister for Food and Agriculture, Ghana, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; Former Governor of Ekiti State. There will also be a Policy Reflection Panel who will further identify how public suggestions can be incorporated into suitable policies which will be presented to the government for implementation.
Panelists are; Prof Babatunde Osotimehin; Executive Director, UNFPA, Mr. Jimi Agbaje; PDP Lagos State Governorship Flag Bearer, Prof Yemi Osinbajo; APC Vice Presidential Candidate, Mr. Ferdinand Agu; Senior Special Assistant to the President, OSGF and Hon. Jerry Weller, 7 Term United States Congressman.
The CVL annual lecture holds 6th of February every year and the 2015 edition will be at the Agip Recital Hall of MUSON centre, Onikan, Lagos by 10:00am. This event will be streamed live on youtube and live interactive questions and answers will be posted on facebook, twitter and google+.
