10th CVL SENS: Highlights

Our guest speaker Peter Lewis was introduced by Prof Pat Utomi as “a knowledgeable political economist and the Director of African Studies & Associate at John Hopkins University.”

Peter Lewis mentioned that Indonesia was ruled by the Military for 3 decades, had contentious election but now Indonesia is very successful. Nigeria also had similar problems but we continue to decline economically.

The crux of Prof. Lewis’ speech was that democracy matters. Democracy imposes accountability to leaders.

Success factors:

  1. Have a capable team e.g. The Indonesia technocratic team
  2. Focus on a lot of binding constraints on the economic growth e.g. electricity, legal issues.
  3. Focus on macroeconomic management.
