The Pat Utomi Widows Support Centre (PUWSC) is organizing an event to celebrate the 2018 International Widows’ Day. The event is aimed at highlighting the numerous challenges, especially economic vulnerability, poverty, and injustice against widows in Nigeria. The event is also organized to seek strategic partnerships with individuals and corporate organizations to providing solutions to these problems.
The event is scheduled as follows:
Date: Saturday, June 23, 2017
Venue: News Agency of Nigeria Hall (NAN) of The National Theatre Complex Annex,
Iganmu, Lagos.
Time: 10:00am.

The International Widows’ Day is set aside by the United Nations (UN) as a day of
action to address poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows and their
dependents in many countries. The theme selected for this year’s commemoration is: Towards Progress for Women.

According to the UN, “International Widows Day is an opportunity for action towards achieving full rights and recognition for widows – too long invisible, uncounted and ignored. A dearth of reliable hard data remains one of the major obstacles to developing the policies and programmes to address the poverty, violence and discrimination suffered by widows. There is a need for more research and statistics disaggregated by marital status, sex and age, in order to help reveal the incidence of widow abuse and illustrate the situation of widows. Pat Utomi Widow Support Centre (PUWSC) which has been in existence over 25 years, joins the rest of the world to pay tribute to widows in a very special way, through an event specifically organised for our Women of Grace group who are members of WSC. At this event, we will launch our new Widows Entrepreneurial Training Programme (WETP) under Adopt a widow initiative to empower women with entrepreneurial skills; seed fund to start up or improve their businesses.

This training will be in different areas such as: Hats and Beads making, Catering Services, Fashion Design, Adire Production, Bags/Sandals/Shoe making, Waste Poly
recycling/Nylon production, Computer/Printing, Dancing, Scriptwriting,
Cosmetology/Gele Tying, Makeup, Music(Instrumentals).
